Büyük Türk âlimi Mâtürîdî (ö.333/944)’ye göre inançlar kalpte olur. Orası iman ile küfrün, sevgi ile nefretin yani iyiliklerle kötülüklerin mücadele yeridir. İnsanı diğer canlılardan ayıran, akılla düşünme ve anlamasını sağlayan, özgür iradesiyle sorumlu olan kalptir. O, yaratılış hikmetine uygun olarak işlevsel aklın ve vahyin kılavuzluğunda imân, sevgi, niyet, ihlâs, takva, huşu, pişmanlık ve affetme gibi eylemler sergilemelidir. Kalbin yaratılış hikmeti, hidâyeti bulmak, ilimlerle hikmete ulaşmak, yaratıcıyı tanımak, Allah’a kulluk etmek, O’nu sevmek, sabretmek ve şükretmektir. Bazı âlimler kötülük nitelikli kalbî eylemleri Allah yaratmaz derken Mâtürîdî ise her tür fiili Allah’ın yarattığı kanaatindedir. Akıl, duyu ve özgür iradesiyle eylemi seçen ve onaylayan kalp olduğundan sonucuna da katlanır. Gerçekleri kavrayıp benimseme kabiliyetine sahip kalbin fonksiyonunun sona erdirilmesi, doğruya, iyiye ve güzele yönelme yeteneğinin köreltilmesine “kalp mühürlenmesi” denilir. Mühürlenmeyi, hakikat veya mecaz olarak yorumlayanlar olduğu gibi mühürlenme sürecine ileten eylemler de incelenir. Büyük Türk âlimi Mâtürîdî’ye göre kalp mühürlenmesinin sebebi; gaflet, nifak, inkâr ve zulüm türü psiko-sosyal eylemlerinden sonra kalbin pişmanlık duyup tövbe etmemesi, içsel arınma ile kalbî halini düzeltme konusunda aklı ve iradeyi iyi yönde kullanmamasıdır. Dolayısıyla kalp mühürlenmesi bir sonuçtur. Bu çalışmada Mâtürîdî’ye göre kalbin halleri ve kalp mühürlenmesinin psiko-sosyal sebepleri incelenmektedir.
