Antik dönemin önemli düşünürlerinden olan Epiküros, felsefe tarihinde genellikle hedonizm düşüncesi le birlikte anılmasına rağmen, toplum ve siyaset felsefesi açısından önemli düşüncelere sahiptir. Bunun nedeni, Antik dönemdeki Platon ve Aristoteles gibi önemli düşünürlerin görüşlerine zıt olarak kendi siyaset felsefesini şekillendirmesidir. Epiküros, Antik dönem felsefesinde bir erdem olarak görülen adalet kavramına şüphe ile yaklaşarak adaletin kendi başına bir erdem olmadığını, insanların faydalarına hizmet eden bir araç olduğunu iddia etmiştir. Aynı zamanda da yine fayda temelli bir toplum sözleşmesini savunan düşünür, insanın toplumsallaşması ile ilgili sorular sormuş ve bu soruların cevaplarını aramıştır. Felsefe tarihinde özellikle Thomas Hobbes, John Locke ve Jean-Jacques Rousseau ile birlikte anılan toplum sözleşmesi düşüncesi, genel anlamda devletin doğal bir kurum olmadığı fikrinden hareketle bireylerin neden bir araya gelip bir toplum ve devlet aygıtı oluşturduğu sorusuna verilen bir cevaptır. Epiküros, aslında mümkün olduğu kadar toplumdan uzak durmayı salık verse de, uzun vadede elde edilecek faydalardan ötürü toplum halinde yaşamanın zorunluluğuna vurgu yapmıştır. Fakat burada önemli bir soru ortaya çıkmaktadır: “insanların kendi faydaları ile toplum sözleşmesinin kuralları çatıştığı zaman, onları sözleşmenin kurallarına uymaktan vazgeçirecek güç nedir?” Düşünürün bu soruya cevap verebilmesi için mahkûm ikilemi teorisi kullanılabilir. Matematik alanında ortaya çıkmasına rağmen son zamanlarda özellikle sosyal bilimler alanında da kullanılan mahkûm ikilemi teorisi, insanlarla işbirliği yapmanın avantajlarını ortaya koyan bir oyun teorisidir. Epiküros’un pratik felsefesinde insanların toplum sözleşmesi kurallarına uymasını sağlayacak unsur, Epikürosçu bilge insan anlayışında yatmaktadır.
Epicurous, an important thinker of the ancient times, has important ideas in the social and political philosophy, although the thought of hedonism is often mentioned together in the history of philosophy. This is due to the fact that important thinkers like Platon and Aristotle in the Ancient Age formed their own political philosophy in contrast to their views. Epicurus approached with doubt the concept of justice, which was seen as a virtue in ancient philosophy, claiming that justice is not a virtue in itself, but a tool that serves the benefits of people. Abstract: Epicurus, one of the important thinkers of antiquity, has important thoughts about society and political philosophy, although he is generally associated with the idea of hedonism in the history of philosophy. This is because he developed his political philosophy in opposition to the views of important thinkers in antiquity such as Plato and Aristotle. Epicurus doubted the concept of justice, which was seen as a virtue in ancient philosophy, and claimed that justice is not a virtue in itself, but a means that serves people's benefits. At the same time, the thinker, who defends a benefit-based social contract, asked questions about the socialization of human beings and sought answers to these questions. The idea of social contract, which is mentioned with Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the history of philosophy, is an answer to the question of why individuals come together and form a society and a state apparatus, based on the idea that the state is not a natural institution in general. Although Epicurus actually recommends staying away from society as much as possible, he emphasized the necessity of living in a community because of the long-term benefits. But an important question arises here: “When people's own interests and the rules of the social contract conflict, what is the force to stop them from obeying the rules of the contract?”. The prisoner’s dilemma theory can be used to help the thinker answer this question. Although emerging in the field of mathematics, the prisoner’s dilemma theory, which has recently been used especially in the field of social sciences, is a game theory that reveals the advantages of cooperating with people. The factor in the practical philosophy of Epicurus to enable people to abide by the rules of the social contract lies in the Epicurean understanding of the wise man.
