OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research was to determine senior nursing students’ views and expectations about the emergency department clinical practice. METHODS: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out in a school of nursing in Ankara during the 2011-2012 academic years. No sampling method was employed, as 77 senior nursing students were volunteer to take part in the study. The data were collected through "a data-collection form" and "clinical learning environment scale (CLES)". RESULTS: The expectations of the senior nursing students’ on the emergency department clinical practice were to participate actively in clinical practice (94.9%) and to meet with health care professionals who show positive attitudes (89.7%). Senior nursing students stated that emergency department clinical practice improved their nursing practice (8.04±1.68), and nursing skills based on professional knowledge (7.87±1.80). The mean of total CLES of students is 72.67±8.99 and the mean of personnel-student relationship subscale 19.37±3.82 out of 30. It was found that a positive relationship between CLES scores and nursing students’ views regarding contributions of the clinical practice at the emergency department to personal and professional development. CONCLUSION: This study showed that during the emergency department clinical practice, clinical learning environment was positive providing significant contributions to personal and professional development of students. However, it is thought that there is some limitation in terms of providing opportunity to practice the theoretical knowledge taking during education. Therefore, this study is valuable to re-assessment students’ views and expectations on the emergency department clinical practice.
