Abstract With a view to tensioning the field of children's and youth literature, which, even though it was established, favored the folklorization and stereotyping of black characters, this article discusses the constitution of a black children's and youth literature that features black characters. Books of black children's and youth literature were analyzed and, based on the illustrations and the text, a reflection was made on the place of the black girl in this literature and in the production of Brazilian children's literature. The importance of black literature for the expansion of the scientific field of literature was discussed and some works on the place of the black girl in black children's and youth literature were analyzed. It was concluded that the black girl emerged in black literature through black female writers, due to the history they carry of social and literary subordination.
