This study evaluates the views of the Mu’tazila scholar of kalam Hakim al-Jushami, who is one of the late representatives of the sect and who acts according to the principle of wa’id within the context of “asma wa ahkam”, in comparison with those of Maturidi. The differences in the way the two scholars perceive the sect are brought under focus. The effects of the approaches and standpoints of kalam schools of thoughts on the concepts such as iman, kufr, shirk, amal, etc. are emphasized within the scope of the earlier discussions regarding the ruling on the great sin. This study aims to point out that the Mu’tazila school of thought interprets the issue in question within the framework of the principle of wa’id. It is emphasized that this approach is also in line with “al-manzila bayn al-manzilatayn” and “adalat” that are part of “al-Usul al- Khamsa”, which constitutes the belief principles of the Mu’tazila school of thought. It is also seen that although Maturidi does not use the title “asma-ahkam”, he discusses the issue to a great extent and directs various criticisms to the Mu’tazila. Jushami and Maturidi’s approaches are examined jointly by considering the problems generally discussed under the “al-Asma wa al-Ahkam” title of the sam’iyyat sections of books on Kalam.
