Özet:

Misis is located in the Yakapınar town of Yüregir district of Adana. Rescue excavation of this ancient city of Misis is one of the substantial trade route in the Roman and Byzantine periods. The city firstly captured by Umayyad in the seventh century, and then it was conducted by Anatolian Seljuks, Crusaders, Cilicia Principality, Mamluk Sultanate, Ramadan Emirate, Dulkadir Emirate and Ottoman State. Excavation of Misis Havraniye Caravanserai was started in 2015 by Adana Archeology Museum. There is a stone bridge in the north of the caravanserai, where the excavations were carried out and an inn from the Ottoman period in the south-west. There are also the remains of Lokman Hekim Mosque in the West of this region. When we examine the caravanserai in terms of its plan, facade, material, techniques, and decoration, it is dated to the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th century. In consequence of the rescue excavations of Misis Havraniye Caravanserai carried out by the museum, Finds such as architectural remains, ceramics, glasses, metals and coins, which belong to Roman, Early Islamic (Abbasid), Byzantine, Crusader-Armenian Principality, Mamluk and Ottoman periods were found. Tiles are frequently used in architectural structures for decoration. It shows diversity in terms of decoration and composition, especially in the Middle Ages. The similarities and varieties of tiles of Anatolia Seljuks, Byzantine and Cilicia are so significant to understand the sense of fashion in the Medieval period. As a result of the excavations, it was understood that Misis was one of the most outstanding tile and ceramic production centers of the Cilicia region. Many semi-finished and finished ceramics were found in the region, furthermore unfinished tile pieces was obtained. In the Middle Ages, it is seen that an intense ceramic production was made in Misis, which was one of the important trade centers around the Mediterranean. The obtained tile pieces during the rescue excavations of Misis Havaniye Caravanserai, located in Yüregir district of Adana, will be examined in our study. In addition to ceramics, the region is a production and trade center within the borders of Cilicia in terms of tiles. It is thought that these tiles, which are probably dated to the period between the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century, may have been traded in the nearby regions. Antioch, Akko, Beirut, Kinet, Al-mina tiles are similar to Misis samples, so these similarities show that we need to search this region’s tiles’ properties. The stylistic and periodical features of the motifs and compositions seen in the ceramic finds are also a part that should be considered in terms of our topic. Periodic features of Anatolian Seljuks tile art, which dominates the Byzantine and Anatolia to which the Cilician region is connected, the effect of these dominant cultures on the production of the region and the different aspects of Misis tiles will be discussed in our study.
