Obesity is caused by the interaction between genetic, metabolic, psychological and behavioral factors, regardless of social class, gender and age. The numbers of the obesity in Brazil are increasing, especially in children and adolescents. The aim of this study is to report a case of adolescent diagnosed with severe obesity, describing the effects of nutritional intervention on body composition. This case study was carried at the Obesity Reference Center of Bettina Ferro de Souza University Hospital, located at the University of Para. At the first visit, the patient was submitted to the initial protocol of care. Overweight was identified at birth and did not receive breast feeding, family history of non-communicable diseases and insufficient family income. The nutritional intervention was based on the guidelines for healthy diet and the last Food Guide for the Brazilian Population. After one year of follow-up, there has been weight, Body Mass Index, body fat and waist circumference reductions. However, no regular practice of physical exercise has been adopted yet. Nutrition assistance has proven to be effective, but there is still a need to improve the level of physical activity.
