İsmail Bozkurt, born in 1940, is one of the few living novelists of Cyprus Turkish literature. His first novel Yusufçuklar oldu mu? was published in 1987. Following that, all of his novels including Kaza (2016) have been about the history, folk culture, daily life and the current issues of the Turkish community in Cyprus. His indulgence in the folk culture of the community allowed him to both contribute to collective memory by conveying cultural elements to future generations by way of literature and describe those people realistically in his novels. Therefore, Bozkurt’s novels function as a mirror reflecting the aspects of the Cyprus Turkish community as well as sociological documents that keep records of cultural and historical values. This makes Bozkurt’s novels a treasure for folkloric literature studies. These novels are abundant in folkloric belief systems and practices, gastronomic traditions, special occassions, myhtological figures and legends as well as the local dialect of the Turkish language. Kaza, the novel we are interested in for this article shares with the reader myhtological figures and legends, gastronomic traditions and the Cyprus dialect of Turkish. The article describes the elements of the Cyprus Turkish culture in the novel and explain why the author chose to mention them in the novel, moving later on to examine the functions these elements carry out in the novel.
