With socio-cultural alteration soccured in socities, The phenomena about music that can not be considered separately from the social context evaluated distinct from social context is redefined and re-interpreted under new circumstances, along with socio-cultural changes that take place in societies in correspondance with the paradigm changes. This means that any music form’s alterations in time can only be understood clearly through studies in which the concepts of social science are used as analytical tools. Canto, which was the case study of this work and created using the descriptive scanning model, is a unique genre of Istanbul, which emerged as a complement to Tuluat theaters in Istanbul, is rooted in the Italian word “cantere”, and simply called as songs sung during intermissions. Historically, in the kanto form, many elements have changed, from music to performance, from purpose to performance techniques by interacting with new conditions. This study aims to examine canto’s interactions with the modernization process in Turkey through the concept of Nilüfer Göle's Non-Western Modernity. As a result of this study, since every society created its own modernity with its own dynamics, the canto was appeared as a product of Turkish modernity, that is, the product of western modernity.
