The recognition of sexual and gender identity diversity in Spanish universities has barely begun to be addressed as an object of study. In this exploratory article some emerging issues are drawn and some lines of action are pointed out. First, there are still barriers for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans) people in Spanish universities, a context of increasing formal equality but in which discriminations, both formal and informal, persist. The innovative LGBTI regional legislation approved since 2009 in Spain have an impact in higher education that is also analysed. To conclude, we present some innovative experiences that are taking place (best teaching practices, research and attention to LGBT) and some challenges for the future.
