Objectives: This research aims to examine the moderating effect of personality traits on the relationship between social loafing and employees’ perceptions of psychological contract violation. Methods: Correlational research model as a quantitative method is used to study if there is a relationship between psychological contract violation and social loafing. This model for the research, is designed to consider psychological contract as an independent variable, social loafing as a dependent variable and personality traits as moderator. Results: Research results show that there is a positive relationship between positive psychological contract perception and the personality trait of openness to new experiences. It was also determined that psychological contract violation significantly predicts social loafing. It is found that the moderating effects of personality traits of extraversion, conscientiousness, and openness to experiences on the relationship between psychological contract and social loafing, whereas the traits of neuroticism and agreeableness have not any moderating effects on this relationship. Originality: Because of the limited number of studies about the antecedents of social loafing behavior as a widely experienced concept in collectivist cultures like our country where group performance comes prior to individual performance; it is considered that studying psychological contract as an antecedent of social loafing behavior, and measuring the moderating effect of personality traits, would contribute to the future researches and provide managerial suggestions for business world.
