Abstract Using the simulacrum theories of French philosopher Jean Baudrillard as a starting point, and Frederic Jameson's interpretation of postmodernism as a result of the cultural logic of late capitalism, as well as Eloy Fernandez Porta's more recent hypothesis on the evolution of culture towards a new aesthetic paradigm called "afterpop", my aim is to present the main characteristics of "full HD realism", a notion coined by Juan Francisco Ferré to refer to his recent novel, Providence (Anagrama, 2009). This article proposes a critical reflection about the power of digital images and purports to show that literary fiction can still compete with virtual reality.
