Abstract This paper analyzes the demographic and socioeconomic differences between the countries of the center -north- and those of the periphery -south-, essentially the European Union and Sub-Saharan Africa. In this context, the central objective of the work is to make an approximation of the extent to which the European Union's migration policy contradicts its demographic reality –and needs. To achieve this objective, the work, in addition to comparing the demographic and socioeconomic realities of both regions, analyzes the relationship between the neoliberal project and security with migrations. Finally, the policy of the European Union towards the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa in terms of migration and the Return Directive are addressed.
