Origin science, also known as etymology in modern linguistics, it is a branch of science that deals with and examines subjects such as what root a word is based on, what meaning it has in the first place, what shape and meaning changes it shows over time. In etymology, which is based on the explanation of the relationships established between words, not only words but also affixes that create new meanings by adding them to the words are used. Determining the roots of words in a language and the meaning elements in these roots is important in determining the antiquity of that language. In this way, the emotional and mental structure of the nation speaking that language is also clarified. At the same time, it becomes easier to clarify new words and meaning developments that appear in the future. In the light of all this, the etymology of ‘ivy’, which is known as a plant from ivyaceae, has dark green colored, different shaped leaves and climbs by clinging to steep, flat places with its small additional roots, has been examined in this study. Firstly, the existence and change of the word "ivy", which appears in the Old Uyghur Turkish with the form of 'yörgey', in historical and contemporary Turkish languages is mentioned. It has been determined that apart from this form of 'yörgey', which comes from the root 'yörge-' and means 'it is the name of a plant that wraps itself around a tree and makes it wither', there are also uses such as mandār, çeŋlik, çırmaş, sandlak in historical Turkic languages. In addition, by scanning the Turkish Dictionary of Plant Names, it has been seen that the word ivy has many different names in today's Turkey Turkish, such as "white vine, dwarf grass, bostanbozan, gin hair, pounded horseradish grass, black vine, black leaf, dodder”. There are rumors that the etymology of 'ivy' comes from the root of ' ‘ışk ' in folk etymology. It has also been mentioned.
