Abstract:

Abstract:

A case study has been conducted at an early childhood education center of a municipality in İstanbul. The participants were a young classroom teacher who had classroom management issues and four children in that classroom. In this study, we sought to understand the classroom life that lead to poor classroom management and teacher’s role and students’ behaviors that contributed to this situation. We identified certain categories related to teacher’s and students’ behaviors using three weeks of classroom observations, then we designed and implemented a program to support the teacher’s behavior in the class to improve the classroom environment. The first researcher who is also expert in early childhood education supported the teacher during and after class for six weeks, and we report that interaction and what we learned from this experience. After this period of implementation, classroom observations for one week has been done without any intervention. We investigated the changes in teacher’s behaviors in identified categories and change in children’s behavior and/or cognitive skills. It is observed that there was a significant drop in frequency of teacher’s and students’ unwanted behaviors, and teacher developed provisional skills that helped her classroom management positively.
