Tarih boyu önemini koruyan Karadeniz, Soğuk Savaş sonrası dönemde küresel güçlerin en fazla mücadele ettiği alanlardan biri olmuştur. 1991-93 yılları arasında Rusya’nın izlediği izolasyonist politikanın, 1993 sonrasında yerini eski Sovyet coğrafyasında etkili olmaya yönelik politikalara bırakması Rusya’nın Karadeniz politikasını da bütünüyle değiştirmiştir. Romanya ve Bulgaristan’ın NATO ve AB üyeliği sonrasında Batı’nın bölgede artan etkisi Moskova’yı daha tepkisel politikaya yöneltmiştir.
The Black Sea, which has kept its importance throughout history, has been one of the areas where the global forces have been fighting most during the Cold War. The isolationist policy followed by Russia between the years 1991-93 left its place after 1993 to the policies aimed at becoming effective in the former Soviet geography has also completely changed the Black Sea policy of Russia. After Romania and Bulgaria joined the NATO and the EU, the increasing influence of the West in the region has led Moscow to a more reactive policy.
