Abstract:

The Turkish literature, after the announcement of Tanzimat Ferman, turns its face to the West. The first examples of Western literary species are first seen in Turkish literature through translations. Theatre, poetry, short story, etc. In this period when the translations of Western species began to be seen, the kind that the Turkish reader loves, without a doubt, becomes a novel. Immediately after the first translation of the novels, the authorship novels begin to be published successively. The first perfect examples of the Turkish novel are painted by Halid Ziya during the period of Servet-i Fünûn. The Roman type, which was taken into mind with a social understanding in the Tanzimat period and puts the aesthetic values on the second floor, in the Fünûn period, is focused on the individual's inner world by leaving from society. In the period of national literature, the Turkish novel, which began to focus on social issues again, continues to be intensely fed from Western literature in all circumstances from the beginning. Halide Edib is one of our writers who has very well absorbed Western culture and literature as a result of Western education. In particular, the English education she received under the influence of her father and the American Girl College, where she continued her education, is an important factor in her close recognition and acceptance of English culture and literature. Although the Western style has received an education, it is extremely important for Halide Edib to be able to absorb and synthesize the East and the West in his mind, though it is not separated from the Turkish-Islamic culture. However, the reflections of Western literature begin to be seen from the first novels of Halide Edib. In this study, it is intended to identify how Western literature reflected in Halide Edib's novels, and how it benefited from which Western writer or poet.
