Charles Lavigerie has appointed as the first archbishop of this new archbishopric and been very active to carry out missionary activities throughout Africa, especially the north, east and west parts of the continent. He founded the Société des Missionnaires d’Afrique which contained two main bodies, Pere Blancs and Soeurs Blanches. The main target of this society was the Muslim population of the North and West Africa. The missionaries of Pere Blancs focused their studies first to the Muslim orphans living in the orphanages which were administered by them. They were also interested in the African slaves whom they bought from the slavery merchants. The missionaries let free and tried to educate them as Christians. The missionary activities of the Society of Missionaries of Africa which approximately began a hundred and fourty years ago are still quite intense in the whole of Africa. The missionaries of the Society have also written down their missionary experiences and information on indigenous cultures. Today, they support their dialogical activities with a journal called Islamochristiana published by PISAI in Rome.
