Water has been one of the important sources of inspiration for Turkish literatüre from clasicial Turkish poetry to the present day with its richnees of semantic layers. Water, which also attracted the great attention of the poets of the Republican Era, has been handled by many poets whose poetics and ideologies are different from each other, from Yahya Kemal to Oktay Rıfat, from Nazım Hikmet to Necip Fazıl it has taken its place in Turkish literatüre as a concept that has gained semantic diversity by enriching with new uses. One of the poets who benefited from the metaphorical richness of water in our litarature is Mustafa Seyit Sutüven, one of the poets of the Republican Era. Especially the poem ‘’Sutüven’’ written by the poet in 1934 is a very rich work in this context. In the poem in question, the poet removes water from its own semantic field by associating it with elements such as memory, time and mythology, and adds new layers of meaning to water with different uses. In this article, first of all, we will focus on what the concept of metaphor is and in the following parts of the article, the poem ‘’Sutüven’’ will be analyzed through the concepts of memory, time and mythology, which the poet assoclates with the water afterwards, it will be tried to determine the place of the poet’s way of handling water in the tradition.
