Abstract:

Urban consciousness is the understanding of the urban culture, being identified with the city, feeling belonged to the city and feeling responsible for the city by the people living in the city. Urban consciousness differs especially in the cities having high rate of immigration acceptance, rapid growth, and socio-economic changes. To increase urban consciousness levels, place attachment; perception of the city, awareness about the city, the sustainability of the sense of responsibility and ownership feelings about the city are important dimensions. This study was carried out to measure the urban consciousness levels of individuals aged 18 and over living in Pamukkale and Merkezefendi Districts of Denizli Province. Within the scope of the field research, 1100 respondents and 22 in depth interviews were conducted. According to the field research findings, demographic, economic, socio-psychological, cultural and physical factors affect the urban consciousness in Denizli. As the age of people and the length of the stay in Denizli increase, the urban consciousness increases; as the income and education level increase, urban consciousness decreases; women’s urban consciousness is lower than men’s level.
