Mâzyâr b. Kârin, the leader of the Kârinis which is among the local dynasties of Tabaristân, became Muslim and he was appointed as the governor of the region in the period of caliph al-Ma’mun. Having been appointed as the governor of Tabaristân, Mâzyâr could manage to dominate over the Bâvendis which he used to have long-standing power struggle with. After a while, he captured the whole region and acted in a maverick manner and then he gave up paying the tax which had to be paid to the governor of Khorasan, Abdullah b. Tâhir. Although he was called to the center by the caliph due to the applications he made, he didn’t obey this order. Many claims were raised about him. It was claimed that he kept company with Bâbek and Afşin even his apostasy was put forward. After these developments, armies sent by the caliph Mu'tasim and Abdullah b. Tâhir, governor of Khorasan seized Mâzyâr by defeating his forces. He was tried and executed in Samarra
