İstanbulun fethiyle (1453) birlikte Türk hâkimiyetine giren Limni Adasının, Osmanlı-Venedik mücadelelerinin yaşandığı XVII. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında, Çanakkale Boğazına hakim konumda olduğundan stratejik önemi artmıştı. XVII. yüzyılın sonlarında ve XVIII. yüzyılın değişik dönemlerinde birkaç kez tamirattan geçen Limni Kalesi, 1768-1774 Osmanlı-Rus harplerinde 1770te Rus donanmasının muhasarasına maruz kalmıştır. Üç ay süren muhasara Kaptanı Derya Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Paşanın yardıma gelerek Rus donanmasını püskürtmesi ile son bulmuştur. Muhasara sırasında yoğun top ve humbara atışlarına maruz kalan kalede büyük tahribat olmuş, 1770li yıllarda tekrar onarımdan geçmiştir.
