Günümüzde yaşam standartlarının artmasıyla birlikte insan ömrünün uzaması sonucu yaşa bağlı hastalıklar da artış göstermektedir. Bunlardan birisi de demans hastalığıdır. Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (WHO)’ne göre, dünya genelinde yaklaşık 50 milyon insanın demans hastalığına yakalandığı bilinmekte ve bu rakamın 2050 yılına kadar 152 milyona ulaşması beklenmektedir. Bakımın çoğunluğunun aile tarafından sağlandığı demans hastalığının güncel maliyeti ise 818 milyar dolar olarak tahmin edilmektedir. Yine WHO verilerine göre demans hastalığı, günümüzde ölüm nedenleri arasında yedinci sırada yer almaktadır. Bu çalışmayla, demans hastalığının yazılı basında nasıl yer aldığının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışma kapsamında, öncelikle Türkiye genelinde yayın yapan tirajı en yüksek dört gazetede olarak belirlenen dört gazetenin Ocak 2016 ve Temmuz 2018 tarihleri arasında yayınlanan haberler “demans”, “bunama” ve “Alzheimer” anahtar kelimeleri kullanılarak taranmıştır. Belirlenen tarihlerde toplamda 532 haberin yer aldığı belirlenmiştir. Ana konusuna göre en fazla gündem/magazin haberlerinin yer aldığı, ardından sırasıyla sağlık riskleri, korunma, teşhis ve tedavi ve demans ile ilgili politika haberlerinin yer aldığı saptanmıştır. Haberlerin içerdiği mesajlar açısından incelenmesi sonucu, en fazla demansa ilişkin farkındalık ve hastalığın topluma maliyeti ile ilgili haberlerin bulunduğu, bunu demanstan korunma ve demansın nedenlerine yönelik haberlerin izlediği ortaya konmuştur.

Today, with the rise of life standards as a result of the extension of human life, age-related diseases are also increasing. One of these is dementia. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 50 million people worldwide are affected by dementia, and this figure is expected to reach 152 million by 2050. The current cost of dementia, with the majority of care provided by the family, is estimated to be $818 billion. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dementia is now ranked 7th among the causes of death. This study is aimed at studying how dementia is presented in the written press. In the framework of the study, the news published between January 2016 and July 2018 of the four newspapers, which were first published in all over Turkey as the highest of four newspapers, was scanned using the keywords "demans", "bunama" and "Alzheimer". In total, 532 reports have been. According to the main topic; it was found that the majority of the daily/magazine news were included, then the policy news related to health risks, protection, diagnosis and treatment and dementia were included. The results of the study in terms of the messages contained in the news revealed that the majority of awareness about dementia and the news about the cost of the disease to the society, it was followed by news about the causes of dementia and protection from dementia.

Today, with the increase of living standards, age-related diseases increase due to prolongation of human life. One of them is dementia. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is known that approximately 50 million people worldwide are suffering from dementia and this figure is expected to reach 152 million by 2050. The current cost of dementia, in which the majority of care is provided by the family, is estimated to be $ 818 billion. According to WHO data, dementia disease is the seventh most common cause of death. In the study, it is aimed to examine how dementia takes place in press media. In the study, primarily four newspapers having the highest circulation are identified for Turkey and these four newspapers are screened for the keywords "dementia" and "Alzheimer's" published in the January 2016 – July 2018 period. A total of 532 news items are found on the determined dates. According to the main topic, it is determined that the agenda / magazine news are the most read news that is followed by health risks, protection, diagnosis and treatment and dementia policy news, respectively. According to the messages contained in the news, it is revealed that the most wide news about dementia is the dementia awareness and the cost of the disease to the society, followed by news about the reasons for dementia and dementia.
