Abstract:

Bu çalışmanın amacı, William Shakespeare’in oyunlarının roman türünde yeniden anlatılması ve ortaya çıkan eserlerin Türkçeye çevrilmesi üzerinden ‘yeniden anlatım’ ve ‘yeniden yazan’ kavramlarını sorgulamaktır. Sorgulamanın inceleme nesnesi Hogarth Press tarafından Ekim 2015 itibarıyla hayata geçirilen ‘The Hogarth Shakespeare’ projesidir. 2016 yılının William Shakespeare’in 400. ölüm yıl dönümü olması nedeniyle başlatılan proje kapsamında, Shakespeare’in oyunlarının günümüzün çok satan, tanınmış yazarları tarafından roman türünde yeniden anlatılması ve bu romanların Türkiye dahil 20 ülkede çevrilmesi planlanmıştır. Başlangıç tarihinden itibaren, proje için yedi oyun roman türünde yeniden anlatılmış, bunlardan dördü Türkçeye kazandırılmıştır. Türkçeye çevrilen romanlar, Doğan Kitap tarafından ‘Shakespeare Yeniden’ adlı bir seriyle okura sunulmuştur. Çevrilen bu romanların yazarlarına, serinin tanıtımı için hazırlanan listede ‘yeniden yazan’ denilmektedir. Tiyatro oyunundan roman üretme eyleminin kaynak dizgede ‘yeniden anlatım’ ve bu sürecin eyleyenlerinin erek dizgede ‘yeniden yazan’ şeklinde ifade edilmesine rağmen, romanlar her iki dizgede de telif eser olarak kabul görmüştür. Ancak yüzyıllar önce yazılan oyunların romanlara kaynaklık ettiği göz önüne alındığında, telif olduğu düşünülen bu romanların bir çeviri gibi değerlendirilip değerlendirilemeyeceği sorusu akla gelmektedir. Ayrıca metinlerarasılık kavramı üzerinden yorumlandığında, çevirinin “tekrarlanabilir”, “çoğul” ve “özgünün farklı bir yorumu” olduğu iddia edilmektedir (Sakellariou, 2014: 7). Bu iddiadan hareketle, bir oyunu roman türünde yeniden anlatmanın bir çeviri eylemi olup olamayacağı da tartışmaya açılacaktır. Son olarak, tartışmaya açılan sorulara cevap aranırken bahsi geçen yeniden anlatım sürecine dahil edilen kaynak ve erek metinler arasındaki ilişkisellik, çeviribilim bağlamında anlamlandırılmaya çalışılacaktır.

The objective of this study is to question the concepts of "re-calling" and "re-writing" through the re-calling of William Shakespeare's performances in the novel style and the translation of emerging works into Turkish. The subject of the survey is the 'The Hogarth Shakespeare' project, which was launched by Hogarth Press in October 2015. In the framework of the project launched in 2016 as the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death, Shakespeare's games are planned to be rediscovered in the novel style by the well-selling writers of today and these novels will be translated into 20 countries including Turkey. From the start date, seven games for the project were re-recorded in the genre of novel, four of which were awarded to the Turkish. The novel was translated into Turkish and was presented to read by the Born Book with a series called 'Shakespeare Again'. The authors of these translated novels are referred to as "rewriters" in the list prepared for the promotion of the series. Although the work of the production of the novel from the theatrical play is expressed in the source series 're-telling' and the actors of this process are expressed in the form of 're-writing' in the male series, the novels have been accepted as authorship in both series. But considering that the games written centuries ago originated in novels, it is reasonable to ask whether these novels considered to be authentic would not be considered as a translation. Also, when interpreted through the concept of intertextity, it is claimed that the translation is "replicable", "multiple" and "a different interpretation of mind" (Sakellariou, 2014: 7). By moving from this claim, it will also be open to debate whether re-telling a game in the genre of a novel is a translation act. Finally, the relationship between the source and the male texts included in the referred reinterpretation process while seeking answers to the questions opened to the discussion will be attempted to be understood in the context of translation.

Retelling As A Translational Practice: ‘the Hogarth Shakespeare’ Project

The purpose of this study is to question the concepts of ‘retelling’ and ‘rewriter’ over William Shakespeare’s plays retold as novels and their Turkish translations. The questioning is based on ‘The Hogarth Shakespeare’ project initiated by The Hogarth Press in October, 2015. As the year 2016 marked the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the publishing house aims to retell Shakespeare’s plays as novels written by acclaimed and best-selling novelists of today and to translate these novels in 2o countries including Turkey. So far, seven plays have been retold within the scope of the project and four of these retellings have been translated into Turkish. The translations have been presented to Turkish readers by Doğan Kitap as a series named ‘Shakespeare Yeniden’ (Shakespeare Once Again). The writers of these retellings are called ‘yeniden yazan’ (rewriters) on the list prepared for the launch of the series. Although the act of writing a novel out of a play is described as ‘retelling’ in the source culture, and the actors of this process are called ‘rewriters’ in the target culture, the novels are accepted as original works by both cultures. However, considering the fact that the plays written centuries ago function as the source texts for the novels, it is possible to ask whether these novels can be seen as translations. Within the scope of intertextuality, translation is claimed to be “repeatable”, “plural” and “a different interpretation of the original” (Sakellariou, 2014: 7). Based on this claim, it is also possible to ask whether retelling a play in the form of a novel can be an act of translating. Finally, in search of answers for the questions, the intertextual relation between the source and the target texts of the retelling process will be explained within the scope of translation studies.
