Semantic Wikis make it possible to perform semantic annotation of content in Wiki pages and to explicitly represent the meaning of associations among content items in a formal and machine-understandable language. Thus Semantic Wikis combine the dual advantages of ontology-based technologies and the wiki collaborative approach. This paper presents a project called Semantic WikiSUN, which investigates the pedagogical prospects of such systems. It is founded on a complex theoretical framework that includes neurocognitive studies, learning theories and social constructivist models of knowledge. Drawing on this experience, the paper discusses the educational potentialities and critical issues connected to Semantic Wikis, and also considers the wider topic of learning processes mediated by semantic technologies generally.
