Abstract This research aims to provide a perspective on metaverse tourism, and a potential future metaverse application, and to analyze metaverse applications in tourism using a methodical approach and science-mapping tools. Bibliometric mapping and document analysis approaches were applied to this analysis by the goals of the study. On May 9, 2022, a review of the literature was conducted within the parameters of the study using the search terms “metaverse and tourism” in the databases “Web of Sciences” and “Scopus”. The production of bibliometric visual science maps utilizing Carrot2 analysis of the information gathered in the context of the same keyword in online resources is another topic covered by the study's methodology. In addition, using the “Google Ngram” word viewer in the method of the study, the frequency of use of the word “metaverse” in Google Books over the years is determined, and a detailed perspective on the interest in the subject is presented. It has been determined that the studies on metaverse in tourism are handled within the scope of virtual worlds, virtual reality, the future of tourism, marketing, the travel industry, digitalization, and virtual applications used in tourism.
