Abstract The growing global concern generated around the protection of the environment and the need to have adequate criteria for decision-making in the context of land use competencies, together with the need to raise the quality of life of the populations, has motivated the search for technical instruments that make possible the sustainable development of rural spaces. The San José de las Lajas municipality represents 15.96 % of the total area of the Mayabeque Province and occupies the first place in territorial extension among all its municipalities, with a population of 74,173 inhabitants and a density of 124.4 inhabitants per square kilometer (OME, 2009 ). Regarding its environmental situation, it is perceived that one of the biggest problems is related to uncontrolled migratory movements, where the potential or limitations of the land for its various uses are not taken into account (Vargas and Ponce de León, 2008). In addition, urban growth is based on inadequate territorial planning plans characterized by the poor or null use of indicators as a basis for the formulation of territorial policies (Paumier, 2004), which together with the lack of a holistic and participatory approach in the process decision-making, where social, economic and environmental aspects are related in a balanced way, causes the conflict between urban and agricultural use to increase.
