Özet:

The modernization in Turkey in the last century, the demographic structure, the change that comes with differences in economic understanding, shows its influence in all areas of social life as well as in the age basis. This change has led to the development of perception towards the elderly in a negative direction. The media, one of the tools that are in the position of a reflection of social changes, is an important instrument in terms of determining the representations that differ within the process of the relationship with the elderly. Therefore, the study of the written media that continues to the broadcast life will be useful in terms of understanding this change. In this study, it was aimed to see how the representations regarding the elderly varied over the years by examining the numbers of the Republican Gazette between the years 1930 and 2017. This study is based on the method of document analysis. The word "old" was searched in the period from 1930 to 2017 through the archive of the Republic Gazette. A total of 33,461 sentences that contain the word "Old" were examined and the words that directly related to the old word and characterized the old word were selected in the sentence. The words obtained were classified in the form of "positive", "negative" and "neutral" and re-specified with the opinion of three people, allocated to repair periods and per cented for every decade. According to the results of the study, the number of words in the negative category produced for the elderly was more found. It has also been achieved that the representation of the elderly has shown regularly negative changes from 1930 to 2017. These findings show that as the media is a tool that reflects social change, the representations of the elderly in social life have changed from positive to negative over the years. During the last century the change that comes with modernization, the alteration of the demographic situation and economic structure in Turkey affects every aspect of social life as well as the elderly area. This change has led to the negative evolution of perception towards the elderly. Media, which is one of the tools reflecting the social changes experienced, is an important medium to portray the change regarding elderly during the historical process. Therefore, it will be useful to examine this change through analyzing the print media that. In this study, it was aimed to see how the representations of the elderly differed over the years by examining the issues of the Republic Newspaper between 1930-2017. This study is based on document analysis method. By entering the archive of the Republic Newspaper over the internet, the word "oldly" was searched between 1930-2017. A total of 33,461 sentences containing the word "elderly" were examined, and the words that were directly related to, and characterize the "elderly" were selected. The words were classified as “positive”, “negative” and “neutral”. According to the results of the study, the number of words in the negative category produced for the elderly was higher. In addition, it was found that the representation of the elderly changed regularly from 1930 to 2017. These results show that the representations of the elderly in social life have changed from positive to negative over the years since the media is a tool reflecting social change.
