Dil, insanlar arasında anlaşmayı sağlayan bir araç, kendine ait kanunlar içerisinde gelişen, yaşayan canlı bir varlık, toplumun en önemli kültür taşıyıcısıdır. Dil, insanoğlunun kalbidir, zihnidir. İnsanoğlu dili, yalnızca konuşabilmesi, düşündüğünü başkalarına iletebilmesi için değil, dış dünyayı anlamak ve anlamlandırmak için de kullanmıştır. Bu bağlamda anlam, bir kelimeden, bir sözden, bir davranış ve olgudan anlaşılan şey, bunların hatırlattığı düşüncedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, kıyak kelimesinin etimolojik incelemesi ve geçmişten günümüze sözlüklerdeki anlamlarını vermeye çalışmaktır. Kıyak sözcüğü, kıy- fiil kökünden +Ak eki ile oluşan isimdir. Eski Türkçede -GAk şeklinde olan -Ak ekinin, Batı Türkçesine geçerken ekin başındaki g- ünsüzü düşer. Kıyak sözcüğü, geçmişten günümüze anlam değişmelerine uğrayan kelimelerden biridir. DLT’den TDK Türkçe Sözlük’e kadar tarihî dönemlere ait pek çok sözcük incelenmiştir. Genel olarak değerlendirildiğinde DLT’de “et suyu, tereyağı, kaymak” anlamında tespit edilen kıyak sözcüğüne EUTS, KTS, HATS, ETG, KB’de rastlanmamaktadır. TKYY adlı eserde kıyak kelimesi için, zalim anlamı verilir. TS’de kıyak kelimesi kıyık başlığı altında “zalim, yırtıcı” anlamları dışında, “binmiş, üzerine yatmış” “küçük çuvaldız, yorgan iğnesi” anlamları verilir. Türkçe Verintiler Sözlüğünde, kıyak kelimesi için Türkçe Sözlük’te geçen şu anlamları verir: 1.Benzerlerinden üstün olan, çok güzel, mükemmel. 2. Güzel, biçimli, yakışıklı, düzgün giyimli. 3.Kıyıcı, zalim, gaddar. 4. Hoşgörü, ayrıcalık tanıma. Kamus-ı Türkî’de bu anlamlara ek olarak “cesur, yiğit” anlamı verir. Bu sözcük aynı zamanda deyim olarak da kullanılmıştır. Bugün de bu kullanım devam etmektedir. (birine) kıyak yapmak: maddi ve manevi destek olmak gibi. Derleme Sözlüğünde ise diğer sözlüklerde verilen anlamlarının yanı sıra “çayır tatlı (tatlı vb. yiyecek için) ağır söz insan dışkısı, pislik az açık aralık.” gibi anlamları bugün de halk ağzında yaşamaktadır.
