Latîfî is a significant literary critic who draws attention with sophisticated criticism in his “tezkire” (collection of biographies). It is seen that the author who doesn’t ignore to evaluate lots of poets in his tezkire in terms of literary degree and poetry quality, also discusses previous assessments and makes some evaluations about them. The most apparent one is the criticism of Tâcîzâde Cafer Çelebi’s criticism about Şeyhî and Ahmed Paşa, two famous poets of the previous period, in Heves-nâme. Cafer Çelebi condemns Şeyhî because he has not clear and fluent expression and uses strange statements. He also condemns Ahmed Paşa due to the fact that he tells poetry through translation. Nonetheless, Latîfî defends these two poets by stating that they must be criticized within the concept of the period’s literary degree and conditions. While doing this, Latîfî states criticised inadequacies of Şeyhî and Ahmed Paşa, too. Furthermore, he says that Cafer Çelebi and the ones who makes same evaluations are the poetry masters. Hence, he embraces an approach that gives everyone’s right regardless of having an aim of signification and denigration. It shows that he is a careful, objective and fair critic. Latîfî’s criticism of Cafer Çelebi’s criticisms denotes his knowledge in previous criticism literature and also his literary knowledge and experience in this area. It is seen that Latîfî makes “the criticism of criticism” in addition to criticism in his tezkire with his evaluations about Cafer Çelebi’s criticisms.
