The aim of this study is to examine the announcement and advertisement policies of the Democratic Party (DP) period within the framework of legal regulations and practices and their reflections in the press. In this context, all the issues of the highest circulation of seven newspapers (Ulus, Zafer, Hürriyet, Milliyet, Cumhuriyet, Aksam, Vatan) published between 1950 and 1960, the Prime Ministry Republican Archives Yassiada Courts Documents (BCAYMB), the registry archive documents registered to Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, books, articles and unpublished theses were examined and the obtained data were analyzed with descriptive method. What were the policies, regulations and practices of the DP government regarding the announcements and advertisements in the press; what were the comments, affirmation and criticisms of the relevant circles about them; and how they played a role in the relations between the press and the government and how these policies should be evaluated in terms of DP’s policies in general. One of the most important sources of income of the press is the legislation and practices on announcements and advertisements, which have a significant meaning about freedom of the press in a country. These can sometimes become important tools for controlling and suppressing the press. Thus, this study then applied in the said period policies depth with a view, comprehensively taking in the framework of different disciplines, announced the date of the press in Turkey and it is important to make a contribution to advertising history work. With this approach, besides the political and economic aspects of the press-power relations of the period, as a alternative to approaches focused on political power in the criticisms of the period, a critical view of the press of the period was possible. The general opinion regarding the press policies of the DP period was that a positive framework was drawn up in the context of press freedoms until 1954, while the economic and social and political problems that started in 1954 deteriorated this positive framework. At this point, the foundation of all these works is the libertarian press laws that the DP has enacted in the early periods of its power. However, the evaluation of DP’s press policies in this way is incomplete but also misleading. Because in the light of the data obtained in this study, it was seen that six of the eight decrees issued by the DP in the period of 1950-1960 between 1950 and 1954, and even five of these six decrees coincide with the first year of the DP administration. Even this simple chronological classification of DP’s legal regulations on announcements and advertisements reveals that DP was aware of them as both an important economic value and power on the press.
