Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate teacher views about factors affecting students’ citizenship consciousness. In this study, qualitative research methodology was used and data were collected via semi structured interviews. The data were collected from 11 social studies teachers who are enrolled in postgraduate education and are working as a teacher at public schools of Ministry of National Education. According to the findings the majority of teachers stated that students show great interest to citizenship and human rights subjects mostly in social studies course and their interests are much higher in the case of subjects are selected from everyday life particularly. It was emphasized by teachers that especially families remain inadequate and irrelevant in citizenship education and all of the teachers expressed that training a good citizen is related to training families. It was expressed by teacher that especially testing system (ets) constitutes a major impediment in terms of citizenship education.
