Okuma eyleminin düzenli olarak tekrarlanmasıyla ortaya çıkan okuma alışkanlığı, okulda başarılı olabilmek, hayatta başarılı olabilmek ve sorumluluk sahibi bir vatandaş olabilmek için her bireyin kazanması gereken bir davranış biçimidir Alan yazın incelendiğinde okuma alışkanlıklarının daha çok üniversite öğrencisi ve yetişkin düzeyinde incelendiği görülmektedir. Oysa okuma alışkanlığı ilkokuldan itibaren edinilmeye özellikle de ortaokul döneminde oturmaya başlamaktadır. Alan yazındaki bu eksiklikten hareketle gerçekleştirilen bu araştırmada Muğla ilinde öğrenim gören ortaokul öğrencilerinin okuma alışkanlıkları irdelenmiştir. Tarama modelinde desenlenen bu araştırmada veriler araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen; öğrencilerin okumaya ilişkin alışkanlıkları, tutumlarını ve eğilimlerini saptamaya yönelik 13 sorudan oluşan bir anketle toplanmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgular doğrultusunda ortaokul öğrencilerinin okumayı en çok tercih ettikleri yazınsal tür sırasıyla roman, gezi yazısı, hikâye, sohbet ve makale olup kız ve erkek öğrenciler arasında okudukları kitap türü bakımından anlamlı bir farklılık bulunduğu; öğrencilerin okudukları kitapları çoğunlukla öğretmen tavsiyesi ile seçtikleri ve çoğunlukla okul kütüphanesi yoluyla kitaba ulaştıkları sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Bunun yanı sıra erkek öğrencilerin basılı kitapları kız öğrencilerinse e-kitapları daha fazla okudukları; erkek öğrencilerin macera ve kahramanlık konulu kitapları, kız öğrencilerse duygusal kitapları okumayı tercih ettikleri de ulaşılan diğer sonuçlardır. Öğrencilerin kitap okumalarına engel olan durumlar incelendiğinde ise erkek öğrencilerin kitap okumalarına telefon ve internetin; kız öğrencilerin kitap okumalarına sınav/ders ve televizyonun engel olduğunu düşündükleri ortaya çıkmıştır.
The reading habit arises with the regular repetition of the reading action is a form of behavior that every individual must gain in order to be successful in school, to be successful in life and to be a responsible citizen. However, the reading habit begins to be acquired from primary school, especially in the middle school period. This study, which was conducted with action from this deficiency in the field of literature, has led to the readings habits of high school students studying in the Muğla province. This survey, designed in the scan model, collected data with a survey of 13 questions, developed by researchers, aimed at determining students’ read habits, attitudes and trends. According to the findings obtained from the research, the type of writing that high school students prefer to read is novel, travel writing, story, chat and article, and there is a significant difference in the type of book they read between girls and boys; the result is that the books they read are mostly selected by the teacher’s advice and mostly reached the book through the school library. In addition, the boys read more books, the girls read more e-books, the boys read more books on adventure and heroism, and the girls read more emotional books. When studies were carried out the circumstances that prevented students from reading books, they found that men believed that the phone and the internet prevented students from reading books, and girls believed that the exam and the TV prevented them from reading books.
The reading habit, which emerges with the regular repetition of the act of reading, is a form of behaviour that every individual should acquire to be successful in school, successful in life, and a responsible citizen. When the literature is examined, it is seen that reading habits are mainly examined at the level of university students and adults. However, reading habits begin to be acquired from primary school onwards, especially in middle school. Based on this deficiency in the literature, this study examined the reading habits of secondary school students studying in Muğla province. In this study, designed in the survey model, data were collected with a questionnaire consisting of 13 questions developed by the researchers to determine students' reading habits, attitudes, and tendencies. In line with the findings obtained from the research, it was concluded that the most preferred literary genres of secondary school students are novels, travel writing, stories, conversations, and articles, respectively, and that there is a significant difference between male and female students in terms of the type of books they read; students mostly choose the books they read with the recommendation of teachers and mostly access books through the school library. In addition, it was also found that male students read printed books more than female students read e-books; male students preferred adventure and heroic books, while female students preferred to read emotional books. When the situations that prevent students from reading books were analysed was found that male students thought that the phone and the internet prevented them from reading books. In contrast, female students thought that exams/lectures and television prevented them from reading books.
