Bu araştırmada amaç, Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi Coğrafya Bölümü öğrencilerinin eğitim ve öğretim faaliyetlerinin temelini oluşturan bölüm öğretim programına ilişkin düşüncelerini belirlemektir. Araştırma 2019-2020 akademik yılında 37’si kadın, 18’i erkek olmak üzere 55 öğrenciyle Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa Üniversitesi Coğrafya Bölümünde yürütülmüştür. Veriler, anket ve görüşme formu yardımıyla toplanmıştır. Katılımcıların genel anlamda coğrafya bölümü öğretim programını tam anlamıyla yeterli görmediği ve yoğun bulmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ayrıca programının zorluğunun sınıftan sınıfa farklılaşması yanında derslerinin genelden özele gidişi ve yeterli bilgi birikimi sağlama konusunda eksiklikleri olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Özellikle uygulama açısından öğretim programının sınırlı kaldığı ve YÖK zorunlu derslerinin (Türk Dili, Atatürk İlkeleri ve İnkılap Tarihi, Yabancı Dil) uzaktan eğitimle verilmesinin yararlı bulunmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ayrıca programda yer alan beşeri ve ekonomik coğrafya derslerinin sayı ve çeşitliliği, fiziki coğrafya derslerine kıyasla daha yeterli görülmektedir. Öğretim programında öğrencilerin en zorlandığı zorunlu ders “biyocoğrafya”, en gereksiz görülen seçmeli ders “Osmanlıca” olarak belirlenmiştir. Öte yandan, harita ve arazi çalışmalarının öğretim programında daha fazla yer alması gerektiği düşünülmektedir. Öğretim programı derslerinin zorluk düzeyinin sınıf ve dönemlere dağılımı konusunda da dengesizlikler olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen bu sonuçların, Türkiye’deki coğrafya bölümü öğretim programı geliştirme çalışmalarına katkı sağlayacağı umulmaktadır. Coğrafya öğretim programının iyileştirilip geliştirilmesi amacıyla gelecekte yeni araştırmalara ihtiyaç vardır.
This study investigated geography students’ views of the curriculum. The sample/study group consisted of 55 students (37 women and 18 men) from the geography department of Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University in the 2019-2020 academic year. Data were collected using a questionnaire and interview form. It was concluded that the participants did not find the curriculum of the geography department fully sufficient and intense in general. It was also determined that the difficulty of the curriculum varied from class to class and that the courses fell short of moving from general to specific and providing sufficient knowledge. It was concluded that the curriculum was limited in terms of practice and that distance education was not useful for the delivery of the compulsory courses of The Council of Higher Education (Turkish Language, Atatürk’s Principles and History of Revolution, Foreign Language). Moreover, the number and variety of human and economic geography courses in the curriculum are considered more sufficient than physical geography courses. For participants, the hardest compulsory course was “biogeography.” To them, the most unnecessary elective course was “Ottoman language.” They also believed that map and field studies should be included more in the curriculum. Moreover, the difficulty levels of the courses are imbalanced in terms of grade levels and semesters. We think that these results will contribute to the development of the geography department curriculum in Turkey. Further research is warranted to improve the geography teaching curriculum.
