Abstract:

In Irk Bitig, one of the Old Uyghur Turkish works, it is seen that the verb "to give birth" is not met with a single word, but different verbs are used according to the identity of the "bearer". The words that are differentiated at the point of being human or animal that give birth are also categorized according to the animal that is gives birth. In the text, the birth of a camel is expressed by the verb of botula-, the birth of a cow by buzaġula- and kelür-, the birth of a horse by ḳulunla-, the birth of a male child of humans by urılan-. In this study, the use of the verbs botula-, buzaġula-, kelür-, ḳulunla-, urılan-, which mean "to give birth" in Irk Bitig, in historical and contemporary Turkish written languages were examined, and as a result of this examination, certain judgments were reached in terms of phonetics, morphology, and semantics. The words botula-, buzaġula-, kelür-, ḳulunla- and urılan- continue to be used with the same meanings to a large extent in historical and modern periods. These verbs took place in historical and modern periods with many variations. Except for kelür-, all verbs are formed in the same way. Urılan- "to give birth to a boy" verb could not be determined except Irk Bitig, so this verb could not be evaluated in terms of phonetics and semantics. These verbs, which appear in the texts of Eastern and Western Turkic, set an example for the detailed, holistic and continuous structure of the Turkic language
