One of the prominent commentators from the Nīshāpūr region is al-Bajalī (d. 282/896). Although he is a remarkable source of tafsīr studies in the region, one of the things that makes al-Bajalī important is that he made the distinction between tafsīr and ta’wīl. Although the tafsīr examples conveyed from him Show that he interpreted the Qur’ān from beginning to end, these examples are also suitable for the tafsīr-ta’wīl distinction he defined. This article examines his biography, his distinction between tafsīr and ta’wīl and his style of tafsīr as well as his effect on the history of tafsīr after him. In this context, it is understood that he was originally from Kūfa, was brought to Nīshāpūr by the Governor of Khorāsān, and was engaged in the tafsīr there until his death. He used the Qur’ān, narrations and linguistics as a source in the tafsīr, but it was stated that the hierarchy of all the evidence between them was not clear enough. In this paper, it has been revealed that he criticizes and approves the previous commentators and narrators, makes choices among the views, and with his own opinions he puts forward, he is a source for later commentators in the history of tafsīr.
