The Friday Khutbah, which is done before the prayer, in essence, serves as the general religious education for Muslims. The purpose of the Friday Khutbah is to provide all strata of the Muslim people with knowledge and understanding on religious issues. There is some dispute among Islamic scholars regarding which language should be used in Friday Khutbah. Some of them argued that the Friday Khutbah must be delivered in Arabic. Others said that the purpose of the Friday Khutbah is to provide the audience with knowledge and guide them to the right destination. They stated that this objective could be achieved only if the Friday Khutbah was delivered in a language understood by the audience. They argued that the Friday Khutbah should be delivered in a language that the local people can understand. This article discusses various views of the Islamic scholars on the subject, including a comparative analysis of their evidence. As a result of our study, we have seen that it is correct to deliver the Khutbah in a language that the local people can understand and this approach is suitable for the Khutbah's purpose.
