One of the first discovered members of the neurotrophin family is the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). Neurotrophins (NT) are necessary to maintain synaptic function control, plasticity, neuronal life morphology and differentiation in an adult nervous system.NGF is defined as a trophic (growth) protein with a message-receptive role between tissuereacting to neuroblast proliferation, dorsal root ganglion maturation, axonal growth, peripheral stimuli, and nerves stimulating this tissue. NGF is highly sensitive to the Trk-A receptor, a protein belonging to the thyrozincinase family.Although NGF is defined as a nervous system specific growth factor, studies show that it also functionsin other systems besides the nervous system. In this review, NGF and its functions are discussed in detail.
