The aim of this study is analyzing the data of the patients who underwent parotidectomy surgery in our clinic retrospectively, reviewing the parotid gland masses according to the literature and comparing the preoperative Fine needle Aspiration Biopsy(FNAB) results with the certain histopathologic results. Seventy-one male and fifty female patients who underwent parotidectomy surgery in our clinic between January 2008 and August 2015 were included in our study. All patients’ ages, gender, the surgical procedures, preoperative FNAB results and postoperative certain histopathologic results were recorded. According to postoperative histopathologic results 101(%85.8) patients had benign parotid masses and 20(%16.2) patients had malignant parotid masses. The most common benign parotid masses were pleomophic adenomas in 53 patients and Whartin tumors in 33 patients. The most frequent malignant tumor was squamous cell carcinoma which was encountered in 6 patients. We performed 106 superficial,12 total and 3 radical parotidectomy for 121 patients with parotid mass. We do not have any patient with recurrent tumor in our followups. We compared preoperative FNAB results with postoperative histopathologic results and the sensitivity of FNAB was %80 in our study. The physical examination, USG, MR imaging and FNAB are useful proedures for evaluating parotid gland masses preoperatively. FNAB results are quite reliable to decide the surgical procedures. Superficial parotidectomy is an adequate procedure for benign tumors of the parotid gland. For malignant tumors total parotidectomy must be performed. Neck dissection must be peformed for patients with nodal metastasis. Elective neck dissection for N0 patients is still a challenging subject.
