Abstract:

Art was a phenomenon in the pre-modern era mostly dependent on power or determined by power. In particular, kings or local rulers paid great attention to the works that would symbolize their own sovereignty and powers. The artists who were present at this time lived under difficult conditions. In the modern era, the appearance of mass communication means has led to the public appealing art, and especially music, to become a major industry. This new industry, more generally named in the form of popular culture, has become a new source of research and discussion for social scientists. The controversial sociology echo suggested that the culture in question is an ideological function and is produced by the rulers to keep the vast masses under control. In Turkey, the general negative approach to music in religious people has changed since 1985. Until then, other popular cultural products, such as music, were subject to an ideological and religious criticism. But new popular religious music, independent of traditional Turkish music and religious music, has emerged with serious religious, social, political messages and has affected religious people to a certain extent. By the 2000s, this kind of music, under the influence of the social-political conjuncture, has gone to discourse and style differences and has begun to lose its influence on religious people. With this article, in the framework of the music and power relationship, we will discuss the appearance, development, basic messages and change of popular religious music in the recent period in Turkey. So we expect that our work will contribute to the discussions on the religious-political change point in the near future.
