Kentler, belli bir topluluğun üzerinde yaşamlarını sürdürdüğü mekân olarak tanımlanmasının yanı sıra, toplumların tarihsel sürecinin ve bununla birlikte toplumsal gerçekliğin sonucunda oluşan yerleşik bir kültürün algısal birikimini yansıtmaktadırlar. Kentsel imgelerin oluşumunda, yaşanılan tarihsel süreç, coğrafi yapı, sosyo-ekonomik ve kültürel gelişim gibi pek çok faktör bir arada bulunmaktadır. Geçmişten günümüze var olan tüm maddi ve manevi değerler imgenin temelini oluşturur ve bedenin varlığıyla birlikte mekânsal bir boyut kazanır. Kimlik ise bu mekânlar arası dolaşımda kendini her tanımlayışında yeni bir durumun deneyimlenişini yaşar.
