Abstract:

Contemporary art museums in Turkey have been established during the last decade and activated in social life. This period was coinciding with the rise of twitter as a social media instrument. Through the social missions of museums to make a contribution for a better society and to push forward the intellectual improvement of individuals it is inevitable for them to benefit effectively from the social media like facebook, twitter, blogs, Networks etc. Analyzing the twitters of three main art museums of Istanbul it can be seen that their quantitative and qualitative values are equal to the averages of main world museums. By tweets in English accompanying the Turkish ones it seems that all of them are searching for the international art platform. They use twitter to create a museum based social atmosphere. Considering the numbers of their followers it is possible to tell that this social environment is existing and improving. Istanbul art museums are following mostly the twitters of main world museums but only few individuals. On the contrary none of those world museums are following them. This case makes us think that they are not proclaiming themselves while holding so many important international exhibitions.
