Bu çalışmada “atom kavramı ve konularının” fen eğitim-öğretimi sürecindeki önemi ve bu konuda yapılan çalışmalara bazı örnekler gösterilmiştir.Kavram yanılgılarının pek çok sebebi olmakla beraber ders kitaplarından gelebilecek olan nedenler de oldukça önemli olmaktadır. Öğrencilerin İlköğretim veOrta öğretim yaşantıları boyunca kullandıkları başlıca kaynak olan ders kitapları bu çalışmanın çıkış noktasını oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, yeni müfredata göre düzenlenmiş; 2008-2009 eğitim–öğretim yılında İlköğretim 4., 5., 6., 7. ve8. sınıflarda okutulan “Fen ve Teknoloji” ders kitapları ile Orta öğretim 9., 10.,11. ve 12. sınıflarda okutulan “Kimya” ve “Fizik” ders kitapları incelenmiştir. Buders kitapları “atom, element, bileşik ve kimyasal bağlanma kavram ve konuları” nın içeriği, sınıflara göre dağılımları, bu dağılımın sistematiği ve kavramların doğruluğu açısından değerlendirilmeye alınmıştır. Bazı kavramlarda eksiklik ve yanlışlıklar tespit edilmiş ve düzeltilmesi doğrultusunda önerilerde bulunulmuştur
