Özet:

The sample of this research, which was conducted to determine the unknown words in the texts of Turkish course books of 7th grade students, consisted of 312 students. At first, the unknown words taking place in the texts of reading and listening activities of Turkish course books were determined. After these words had been compared with the words taking place in Turkish Workbook for Students for th grade students and Teacher’s Book, it was checked whether these aforementioned words were repeated in the other texts and vocabulary activities. After that, in order to determine what was done in vocabulary activities in Turkish courses, Turkish teachers were consulted. In conclusion, the course book writers were consulted and how they chose the words for the vocabulary activities during course book writing process was determined. Research results put forward that the proportion between unknown words and the words taking place in vocabulary activities is about 39%, that teachers found vocabulary activities in the course books insufficient and that course book writers benefitted from their own personal and professional experiences mostly while preparing vocabulary activities. Both teachers and course book writers stated that vocabulary activities in the course books should be handled in a systematic way.
