ABSTRACT Cities have been a centre of attraction for population masses because of having socio-economic and cultural activities in the course of time their emergence process to the present time. As a concept, city is a dynamic settlement area being more and densely populated, engaging in more non-agricultural practices in terms of economy, offering broad opportunities in terms of health, education, industry, and trade. Cities witness population movements both with nearby settlements and in itself. This situation is related to nature of cities and socio-economic, cultural developments. With these features cities generally have a dynamic structure. The city of Kahramanmaraş, as an area, lies in the south skirts of Ahır mountain, in an area relatively higher than the plain, and generally in east-west direction. The population in Kahramanmaraş has shown a steady increase from past to present and with the effect of this increase the city has widened in terms of spatial area in the last 25-30 years. The city area of Kahramanmaraş continues to develop towards west direction by growing rapidly. Thus, growing city area causes population density to move these housing areas. When neighbourhood populations within periods of ten years including 2008, 2013, 2017 are examined it is observed that the interior, east and southeast population which makes up the core of the city show inclination to the west-northwest of the city centre. In other words, city population moves towards the areas having vertical housing which keep developing as modern urbanization.
