Natural disasters that occur in our country vary according to geographical regions. For example, in the Black Sea region, floods and landslide disasters are encountered and these sometimes cause loss of life and property. But in the Black Sea region, natural disasters, which are rare in history, have also occured. One of them was recorded as an incident of rolled rock and mountain overthrown during Ottoman Empire in 1888 in the village of Akdağ in Kelkit township in the Sanjak of Gümüşhane. A large part of the rock-mountain mass over the village of Akdag flew on 6 May 1888 and destroyed the center of the village and caused more than 20 families and animals. That day, in Akdag village, 41 men, 55 women, totally 96 people lost their lives under the mountain. After this great natural disaster, search and rescue work was started immediately and the governorship and the municipality mobilized for survivors of the disaster. The matter is transmitted to Sultan Abdulhamid Han and the Sultan sends out flour for the bread needs of 160 survivors from his private treasury. (Hazine-i Hassa) In addition, he orders 500 lira to be paid from income of the sultan farm 25 tents to be given from the army (Seraskerlik). While the remaining part of the mountain had danger of falling, the thirteen acres of Kumonu land, which were belong to the villagers died under the mountain, were allocated to the residence of the survivors for not being suffered from damage, loss and death.
