Since early period of Islamic history tafsir has been seen as a field where scholarly disputes occurred. The centre of disputes has been tafsir narrations. The problems in the tafsir narrations taked Aĥmed ibn Ĥanbel (241/855) to the conclusion that “there are have no ground three things: tafsir, malahim, magazi.” Bringing forward these narration based problems bravely, evaluation of them and seeking solutions became compulsory for mufassirs. In this context, Tefsîru’l-kur’âni’l-azîm of Ibn Kathir became prominent. Ibn Kathir revived isnâd and his analyses of narrations were isnâdoriented and text-oriented. Ibn Kathir did not aimed to write just narration based tafsir. He evaluated Isra’iliyyat and Hadith Mawquf which takes place in the tafsir narrations and presented the method of analysis to resolve the problem. From this aspect his tafsir is an important source for those who do not want to fall into error while interpreting the Quran.
