Translation, which enables interaction between different cultures, became an autonomous scientific branch in the second half of the twentieth century and since then it has been accepted as an effective tool for intercultural communication in today’s globalizing world. As a result of increasing academic interest in the process of translation, a paradigm shift has occurred and the act of translation has started to be established on the organic bond between language and culture, which has resulted with a target culture-based understanding on translation studies. In this context, the new understanding does not aim at transmitting the message from one language to another in a word-to-word mode but aims at transferring all the cultural components like literature, sociology, politics, history, psychology, etc. into the target language in a clear, understandable mode. When it is considered that each society has its unique culture, the most important translation problem in terms of achieving the original meaning and the mode of the source text is the transmission of cultural elements into the target language. In the last ten years, translator who would remain in the shadow of the author in terms of traditional approaches has attained a big success by achieving a unity between culture and language, and by increasing the interaction between different cultures. In this respect, this study will focus on the cultural elements in the French translations of the social-realist writer Orhan Kemal’s novels entitled Bereketli Topraklar Üzerine and Müfettişler Müfettişi within the scope of Peter Newmark’s classification of cultural elements. Examining how cultural elements are transferred to the target reader, it will illustrate the definition of an “ideal translator” who is supposed to be intellectually well-equipped and have the command of both languages and cultures. Moreover, the translator’s choices made during the translation process will be discussed in accordance with the equivalence principle.
