Social studies is an interdisciplinary educational field which grounds on social sciences. Geography is one of the disciplines in social studies. The aim of this study is to present the social studies teachers’ opinions on the role of geography within values education in social studies lessons. The study adopts the qualitative research tradition. It involved 31 social studies teachers working in the Kastamonu province in 2013-2014 academic year and the data were collected through semi-structured interviews with these teachers. The social studies teachers participating in this study stated that environmental awareness, cultural heritage awareness, responsibility and patriotism values listed in the programme could be gained through the discipline of geography. They pointed out that these values could be taught with the help of technology and via field trips and observations. They associated the values related to the discipline of geography with the learning domains of People, Places and Environments, Production, Distribution and Consumption and Culture and Heritage. The teachers also stated that geography helped pupils to familiarise the world and his/her environment and to gain environmental awareness. The social studies teachers described the discipline of geography as the second most effective discipline in teaching values in social studies lessons.
