Media in Turkey has been in the process of re-structure since 1980s, and it has become a sector embedded in big capital groups. In the period between the 1980s and today, media has an active role in the political and social transformation of our country. Just like the effective liberal policies since that period of time, the fact that media has had a great impact on the political and social structure have caused palpable changes in Turkey. In this context, the aim of this study is to make a contribution to the political communication studies by making a comparative analysis to media systems in Turkey in between present and the 1980s. With reference to the variables of Hallin’s and Mancini’s (2004) Comparative Media Systems Model, this study examines the political and social transformation of the media sector in Turkey as of the 1980s.
